The INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Brasilia 2010

The Brazilian Ministers of Education and of the Environment invited in 2009 the UN Member States to take part in a large scale process of international cooperation: the International Conference of Children and Teenagers for the Environment - “Let’s take Care of the Planet”, which was held in Brasilia in June 2010.

The International Conference and the previous national processes were the results of a common action between the governments, the civil society and the international organizations. It was organized in the framework of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).

At the origine of this international project, a Brazilian experience honed since 2003

The project “Let’s take Care of Planet!” enters in a process that was born in 2003 with the 1st National conference of Children and Teenagers for the Environment, organized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. This process involved 21.000 schools and 7,5 million young people in Brazil. The charters “Vamos Cuidar do Brasil” - “Let’s take Care of Brazil” - written during these conferences, were one of the main results of this dynamics.

In 2009, during the 3rd Brazilian National conference, a meeting of international observers was organized in parallel, to assess the feasibility of a similar process in various countries of the world and of organizing an International Conference of youth for the Environment. The challenge was then launched, and assumed successfully!
